From the Stage to Superpowers… or Lack Thereof: Travis Jay Talks Supacell, Representation, and the Power of the Blerd

When you think of superheroes, you might picture capes, epic battles, and impossible stunts. But when we sat down with Travis Jay, star of Netflix’s Supacell, we quickly learned that sometimes, the most powerful thing a character can do is simply show up—and show out.

Travis Jay is more than an actor; he’s a stand-up comedian, a storyteller, and now, a rising star in the world of Black British sci-fi. And as we chopped it up in this exclusive interview, it became clear: this isn’t just about a role in a TV show. It’s about representation, community, and what it means to be a Blerd in a world that hasn’t always made space for us.

🎙️ The Interview: Travis Jay on Supacell, Comedy, and Culture

NBO: Travis, you’ve been killing it on stage as a stand-up. What was it like stepping into the world of Supacell?Travis: Man, it’s wild! You grow up watching superhero movies, dreaming about it, but you don’t actually think you’ll get the chance. When I got the call for Supacell, I was like, “Wait, I get to be part of this?” It was humbling… and a little surreal, to be honest.

NBO: Was the audition process tough?Travis: Bruv, it was intense! But you know what? I felt like I belonged. I walked in there thinking, “Let’s go.” And when I got the role, it was like—this is for all of us. Black British kids who never saw themselves in these stories.

NBO: How does your comedy background help you in a show like Supacell?Travis: Comedy teaches you timing. It’s all about rhythm—when to land a line, when to pause. That helps a lot on set, especially in ensemble scenes. And honestly, I think it helps keep things human. Even in the middle of big action scenes, you want those little moments that feel real.

NBO: Without spoilers, what should fans expect from Supacell?Travis: Expect us. Our culture, our accents, our stories. Supacell is about Black British life in all its layers—family, community, struggle, joy… and yeah, some dope powers too. It’s more than just action—it’s about heart.

NBO: Any funny stories from set?Travis: Oh, plenty! There were a few times I thought I was doing the coolest stunt ever, and then you see the playback, and it’s like, “Yeah… nah.” (laughs) But that’s the beauty of it—it’s a learning curve, and we had so much fun.

🖤 Why Supacell Matters—And Why Blerds Need to Watch

Let’s be real—Supacell isn’t just a superhero show. It’s a cultural statement. For too long, Black characters in sci-fi have been sidelined, tokenized, or erased entirely. Supacell flips that script and says:We exist. We matter. We belong here.

Travis Jay’s role in Supacell is more than just a performance—it’s a message to every Black kid who’s ever felt like they had to hide their nerdy side. It’s for the Blerds, the dreamers, the creators. This show is proof that we can—and should—be the heroes of our own stories.

🌍 Travis Jay’s Advice for the Blerd Generation

“Be undeniable. Do the work. And when your moment comes, step into it with everything you’ve got. Don’t dim your light for anyone.”
